Easing back into school
Is your child ready to go back to school? What can you do to make the transition easier, especially if they are going to a new school?
Some quick things to consider:
The Importance of Routines:
Whether it’s waking up earlier or limiting screen time, now is the time to start establishing the routines that you want your child to have during the school year.
Allow for Adjustment:
Especially when your child is moving up to either middle school or high school, they may experience some big emotions. Ask them how they are feeling and take the time to listen. Acknowledge your child’s worries.
Be Optimistic:
There’s a lot happening in our world. Remind them about the good times they have had in school.Talk to them about extracurricular activities where they can make other children with similar interests.
Coach empathy, letting them know they aren’t the only children scared or nervous.

Teach your child to speak up!
Self-advocacy means knowing your rights and responsibilities, and having the ability to make choices that affect your life. Here’s how to help your child develop this important skill:
- Encourage young children to ask questions if they don’t understand something.
- Ask older children how they think they should solve a problem, rather than solving it for them.
- Offer to be their adult back-up if they try to solve a problem, like emailing a teacher or asking for a manager at a store, and don’t get results.
